Mir Alan Tank

8 kms. an artificial lake. A good picnic spot. Built by Mir Alam Salar Jung i grand  father of Salar jung III.Prime Minister of Nizam.Adjacent to the Nehru Zoological Park is the Mir Alam Tank. A pathway through the park leads to the tank. Located 16 kms away from the airport, Mir Alam Tank was once the city's water source.

It was named after its builder, Mir Alam, (Prime Minister of Hyderabad 1804-1808) this tank is a unique piece of engineering with a mile-long bund formed by 21 arches. Its construction was started on 25th July 1804 and was completed on 8th June 1806. Andhra Pradesh Tourism offers boating facilities that include mechanised boats, steering boats and speed boats. The speed boats available here are mostly hired for film shootings. Guest House accommodation is also available.

The historic Mir Alam Tank close to the Nehru Zoological Park would get an aquarium complex showcasing the marine life found around the Indian subcontinent and major rivers of the country. A project being initiated by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), the proposed facility would have around 2,000 fish/sea animals covering at least 200 species of the subcontinent apart from an equal mix of species from other parts.

The complex to come up on 1.75 lakh square feet would have large wall mounted and cylindrical display tanks to house these species and smaller tanks for special creatures. A major feature would a transparent acrylic walkthrough tunnel, at least 100 metres long and 6 metres wide, to offer a panoramic 360 degree view of marine life for the visitors. This tunnel has been proposed as a slow moving walkway with a fixed floor to allow visitors step aside and observe creatures in greater detail.
Major attraction

Diving tanks with facilities to snorkel and dive inside the tanks with fish/exhibits would be another major attraction at the project to come up at the lake with a present water spread of about 350 acres. A quarantine area for storing sick fish, those in mating phase and reserve fish apart, the complex would have guided tours, an interactive gallery with audio-visual display and touch pools allowing visitors touch and examine the marine life. Food courts serving a variety of cuisine and souvenir shop with publications disseminating information on marine subjects would also be set up.

The HMDA has called developers for setting up the project on build, operate and maintain basis for a period of 33 years. The standards called for include adhering to the Marine Aquarium Council’s International Standards. Mir Alam Tank is a small lake that has been built right next to the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad. Take a tour to the Mir Alam Tank to feel the peace and tranquility of nature untouched by time. The unique feature of this Tank is that it has 21 in-built small masonry dams, semi-circular in shape.

The Mir Alam Tank is named after Mir Alam, the then Prime Minister of Hyderabad and the builder of the Tank, who ruled for a period of 1804 - 1808. The construction of this tank is really worth appreciating. It is a wonderful paradigm of engineering, comprising of one-mile bund with 21 semi-circular arches put up on it, thus giving the whole scene a majestic look.
