GREAT NICOBAR : Campbell Bay , the head quarters of Great Nicobar island is 294 nautical miles from port blair . This is the biggest island in Nicobar Groupwith high hills and big rivers like Alexandria and Galatea . The island originally was inhabitated by the extremely shy and non-voilent primitive tribes shampens,and there were few Nicobari habitations on the West Coast.
After India became independent a pilot project was started , brining 100 Ex service families from punjab for rehabilitation .the entire Coast of transport of the families, free rations till the land started yielding,subsidy for the construction of house, free tractorisation , free seed and fertilisers , subsidy for utensils and bullocks, all was provided by the Government in the initial years of programme. The island of great Nicobar has been made accessible by the construction of two strategic roads of North - south and East -West road.
