Lohri: Sign of Culmination of winter or Bonfire Festival

 “Lohri” a sign to off winters means it mark that from this day winters starts ending. This auspicious festival is celebrated at 13th of January every year. It is a bonfire festival which is mostly celebrated by punjabis. Lohri is not only a festival for Punjabis but it is also a way to live life in their own unique and awesome way.

Lohri falls in the month of January of Magh, before one day of Makar Sakranti. This festival is not only celebrated by Punjabis but it also celebrated in northern Indian states like, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh etc. This day is also known as sun’s entry in Makar Rashi and celebration of fertility.

At this day children visit door to door and ask for lohri with singing lohri special “Sundari Mundari” song. People offer them money and eatables like dry fruits, fruits and sweets. Children seem very happy to have eatables like, peanuts, sesame, gujak and rewari. The lohri song is sing in the praise of Punjabi hero Dulha Bhatti who helped a poor village girl by getting her married off like his own sister.

In evening a huge bonfire lit in the front yard of house and every family member and relatives come across to it. As the fire or flame got rise everyone circle around the fire by praying to God Agni or Fire to bless with honor and prosperity. When they circle around the fire they sing the folk and popular songs and throw puffed rice and popcorn in fire. After that they exchange gifts to each other.

Lohri put a lot of fun to Punjabis as they are fun-loving. So, this auspicious festive provide a chance to take a break from busy lives and schedules to have a company with others. It is celebrated with full entertainment when a child birth or marriage happens in any house. It also take place as a marry making festive with Bhangra dance. People love to have holy dip at this day in Holy River.

So, in essence this festival is near to us as some days are away from today. So, let’s have some plans to celebrate it in your own way. And share your ways or plans with us that how you are going to celebrate it.

Really a valuable post, because I got a new knowledge of festival "Lohri". Kindly share more like this. So the people from different areas can have some idea of festivals in India. I too wish to contribute some, especially in South India.
