Kumbhalgarh: Overview

KUMBHALGAR FORT :The second most important fort of mewar after Chittorgarh is the Kumbhalgarh situated in the north of Udaipur and near Nathdwara. It was built in 1458 AD by Maharana Khumbha. It stands on a Cragguhill, covering an area of 12 sq.km, this fort fell only once to the army of Akbar and that too because of the water supply of the fort was contaminated by the enemy forces. Even today the fort is reached with some difficulty so its inaccessibility when it was built can be imagined. It served as a refugee for the rulers of Mewar in times of strife. The fort lies 1,100 metres above sea level, and enclosed within its fortified Ramparts are Palaces, Temples, fields water sources and forms fully self-con
AD. It is said to have incurred a cost of Rupees 18 crores and 53 Lakhs. 1500 Sculptures and 1200 labourers worked very hard for continuous 14 full years to complete this temple. For this spot it is a famous that to acquire this land he sqreaded as many golden coins as it totalled rupees four crore 53 Lakhs and 60 thousand and payings these golden Mohurs, to these owner- brahmins, who were against the building of the Jain temples, were made in favour. In this temple there is huge beautiful and attractive statue of Jains thirthankar swami Adinath. Jewel are fixed in places of the eyes of the statue. In front of this temple there is a meeting hall which stands on 48 pillars. In all the four walls around it, there are small temples each contains to these. There is also a statue of Goddess "Ambika". In this temple , a statue of Bhagawan Adinath, built in black stone too stands.
