Ambala: Overview

According to the district Gazetteer, Ambala was founded in 14th century by one Ambarajput; hence its name. It is more lightly that the name is a corruption of Ambala or the mango village, judging from the mango groves that exist here.
Ambala came under British control in 1823 when it became the head quarters of political agent for the Cis Sutlej states. The contonment was established in 1843. In 1859, Ambala became the headquarters of a district and division formed under the Punjab administration. It still maintains its dual status.
