Vadodara History

History

Pre-20th-Century History

The earliest mention Vadodara finds is way back in the 812 AD when it was a small settlement some distance away from its present location. The region was ruled by Hindu rulers till 1297 when the influx of Muslim rule spread across central India and control passed into the hands of the sultans of the Delhi Sultanate. By 1573, Vadodara was ruled by the Gujarat Sultan but he soon lost his empire to the growing might of the Mughal Empire. Their domination over most of central India continued unchallenged for over a hundred years till the Marathas emerged as strong contenders in the 1730s.

Vadodara became the new stronghold of the Marathas Gaekwads, who made it their capital in 1735. The rule continued uninterrupted till Indian Independence in 1947. Maharaja Sayaji Rao III was the most progressive of all the rulers of Vadodara and he introduced many civic reforms and established many academic and judicial institutions. The power of Vadodara was, in affect curtailed by the increasing authority of the British in India and by 1802, the British had established a resident in Vadodara, ostensibly to help maintain relations and a tenuous peace between the Bhils and the princely states of Gujarat and the Kathiawar Peninsula.

With Independence, Vadodara merged into the mainstream of Indian states and became part of the newly constituted state of Gujarat. Modern Vadodara is renowned as a centre of academic excellence and is fast developing as a major industrial hub of pharmaceutical and glass industries.
