Udaipur: Overview

Udaipur, the entracing city of Dawn, looms uplike a vision in white, surrounded by rich Aravalli bills and mountains and set on the edge of the three lakes. Described as the most Romantic City of India.Udaipur is interspread with shim¬mering lakes, marble palaces and foun¬tains lying with each other to capture the visitors attention.
This fascinating city was founded by Maharana Udai Singh in 1559 AD and was named Udaipur. The three Lakes of Udaipur, the Pichola lake, Fateh sagar lake and Udai sagar lake. The three lakes which give onto a fertile plain .The old city was encircled by a 9 kms long bastioned wall which was pierced by 11 gates, only five remain. Entrance to the city was mainly from surajpol gate on the East. Now this massive wall has given way to new Bazaars and buildings by efforts of the Urban Improvement Trust.

Repeated aggressions of Mughals and Mewar's capital chittoor led Maharana Udai Singh to shift it at some secured place on 19th March 1559. Udai Singh's Grandson Amar Singh took birth on the ocean Maharana went to Eklingji for worshipping.

On day chasing a prey during hunting, he reached near Ahar Maharana and found this place secure enough for establishing the capital of Mewar. There was abundance of water and the place was surrounded by lofty hills. It was for secure a place than Chittoor from mili¬tary point of view. Maharana consulted his lieutanants and laid the foundation of Udaipur city at Moti Margi with erection of Motimahal palace.

One other day while chasing a rabbit Maharana Udai Singh reached near Pichhola, where on a nearby hill he saw a meditating Sadhu. Maharana went near him and touched his feet. Sadhu blessed Maharana and said if you will establish a city on this land then that city will never be conquered by your enemies. Maharana acting on the advise of Sadhu built a palace there which still remainds us the famous windsor palaces.
