Shillong: Overview

SHILLONG is the capital of Meghalaya in the Khasi Hills at an altitude of 1500 metres above sea level. It is the one of the best known hill resorts of India. Shillong is only 100 kms from GUWHATI. The British favoured this resort and their influence can lie seen in the names of the water falls which abound. Hence Shillong's pride is its labulour 18-hole golf course which attracts serious golfers from all over the world for tournaments and matches. Shillong is the home of several tribes. The main resident tribes are the Khasis, Jaintial or Garos through the Nagar.   

With rolling hills and ellegant pines, Shillong was known to the British as "Scotland of the East" an impression first thought out by Barapani, the stunning loch-like reservoir on its fringes. Shillong has always been the meeting point of traditional cultures and cosmopolitan styles. It is the capital of Meghalaya. Located at an altitude of 1,496 mts. above sea level, this beautiful hill station has been one of India`s best known hill resorts for many decades. A fresh balmy air and a bracing climate makes Shillong a place for all seasons. The capital takes its name from that of a tribal deity `Shulong` who is believed to reside on the Shillong Peak. The tribes of Khyrim, Mylliem, Maharam, Mallaisohmat, Bhowal and Langrim trace their descent from Shillong. Shillong is also a proud possessor of one of the best 18 hole golf courses in the world.You can never know why exactly Shillong is called the Scotland of the East unless you actually come here and live its natural splendor. The town is indeed mystifying with its tall pines, verdant hills and pretty cottages and it has a strange charm which comes from it bring relatively unexplored. Shillong gets its name from its guardian god, ‘Leishyllong’ who is believed to be residing in the peaks. One of the best things one can do here is nothing. The town is an ideal place to get relaxed and feel rejuvenated. Shillong has much to enchant you, so be here for a mesmerizing experience.
