Pithoragarh: Overview

Pithoragarh third district of the Kumaon. This ancient vally atti¬ tude 1815 metres above sea level. It borders with China (Tibet) on the North and Nepal on the East. Doz- ens of lofty snow peaks, i.e. Nanda Devi East (7434 metres), Nanda Devi West (7817 metres). Thrishul (7045 metres) Hardeo (6565 Mts). Nandakhat (6861 mts). Rajrambha (4200 mts) Bambadhura (6355 mts).The town is situated is a malty valley 5 kms length (long) and 2 kilometres wide. Pithoragarh is of- ten called "Miniature Kashmir. The town was an important land mark of the mediaeval times. Pithoragarh was once a stronghold of the Chand Rajas and the Raiks, and the many temples and ruined fort bear witness rule. The centre of power shiftet to Champawat, the capital of the Chands, 78 kms from Pithoragarh with its resultant benefits.From these high mountains flow the might rivers of Kuti, Dhauli, Gang (East), Gori Ganga, Ram Ganga (East) saryu and Kati (Sarada). Rivers which provide couple scope for rafting and canoe- ing. The district has a very high per- centage of forest coverage of conical varieties in the North. Subtropical va- riety in the middle and tropical forest in the South, Many parts of the for- est are vergin and provide numerous flowers and wild-life includingPeacock. Elephant and Tiger in the flowers South, MonalPheasant, Musk Deer and snow Leopard in the North.The town lay on the old trade route to Tibet and is still enroute the sacred trail to mount Kailash and Manasarovar lake.
