Pandharpur Travel Guide

Pandharpur: Overview

Pandharpur is the largest pilgrim age in Maharashtra. This is situated on the banks of the Bhima or Chandrabhage river. The town is studded with temples. The temple of deifies sri vithoba, as aspect of Vishnu with two hands at his waist and Rukmini, are worshipped by a large majority of Hindus in the area. Congregatoins in lakhs gather at pandharpur on Ashada Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi, In the festive months of July-August, the famous temple of lord Vithal draws of devotees from all over the country.
The temple is of 12th-13th century A.D. Yadava date, Roughlu contemporary with Yadava Devagiri to the north but most of its present appearance is of the 17th-18th centuries and hence of Maratha date. The sacred singer Tukaram (1598-1649 A.D) was a devotee of Vishnu as Vithoba, worshipped at a pandhapur. Tukaram spent some years as a grain merchant before renouncing the world. Pandharpur has great importance in the spiritual and cultural life of Maharashtra.
