Nasik: Overview
Nashik is one of the most sacred cities of India, situated on the holy River Godavari. It has very long ancient tradition. This sacred city was given different names in different ages. It was called " Padma Nagar" in Kruita Yuga. TRIKANTAKA in Treta Yuga, "JANASTHNA" in Dwapara Yuga "NAVASAIKA" or "NASHIK" in KALIYUGA.
The important Kumbh meld is held at Nasik once on every 12, years when the millions of people come here from all parts of the country to have a holy dip in the Godavari to come out of their Sins. It paves way to many fascinating forts and royally graceful temples that possess an aura of exuberance. This part of the terra firma is more than a dream destination for zealous lovers of glorious travel. It plays abode to most of the industries located in Maharashtra, including the Security Printing Press of the government, the nation's currency printer. The core of commerce and trade, it was earlier the country's largest market arena.
Widely held as the land that produces the maximum varieties of fruits and vegetables, it is rightly labelled as the green belt area. It lodges a great diversity of tourist attractions, religious domains and the nature at its bountiful and beautiful best. Nasik was the capital of the powerful Satavahana (also spelt as Satvahans) dynasty. It was an important trading port to the west. The city of Nasik was called as "Gulshanabad" during Mughal period. Later, it was again given its old name when Peshwas took over in 1751, but they lost Nasik to the British in 1818.
In the year 1864, Nasik Municipality was formed and in 1869, it was made a full-fledged district with its present 13 'Talukas' (regions). Nashik also played a major role in the freedom struggle of India. The non-cooperation movement started by Mahatma Gandhi was a rage here. The temple entry movement to finish untouchability started by Dr. Ambedkar and the mass movement was also organized in Nasik in the year 1932.
The splendour of Nasik tells you all about the magnificence of the place. Its fame has augmented by leaps and bounds due to its propinquity to Shirdi, a very famous pilgrimage centre, where thousands cram to acquire darshan of Shri Sai Baba.
