Manipur: Overview
Manipur is a small hillystate. Imphal is the capital of the State. Boundary with Burma, lying South Nagaland, north Mizoram and East Assam. It was in existance in 100 B.C. The City of Kangala from which the Kabha dynasty, ruled Manipur in the pre¬( ;hristian times. There are various meanings given to the name Imphal. But the origi¬nal name ( Imphal ) Yumphal ( Yum = House, Phal = Collection ) was changed by the I iritish. The road is heroic with memories of the second world war, it was not so in 1944. Then every metre of this road was paid for in blood and there are many highway markers which identify the sites of battle between the British forces and the Japanese.
Manipur is a state in northeast India, sharing common borders with Myanmar in the east and the Indian states of Nagaland in the north, Mizoram in the south and Assam in the west. It forms a cup-shaped valley surrounded by hills of the sub-Himalayan ranges. Chinganguba (or Surameti) peak is the highest at 12,557ft. The main ethnic group of Manipur is called Meitei. Their language, Meitei, is also known as Manipuri and is the main language of the state. Naga and Kuki groups also inhabit the land. Migrants from Bengal and Bangladesh form a significant proportion of the population. Lai-Haraoba is the most important Manipuri festival. Manipur, meaning 'land of jewels' is indeed precious with extreme natural beauty and unique culture. The tiny state finds Assam in the West, Mizoram in the South, Nagaland in the North and Myanmar in the East as its neighbours.The mother nature picked up the painting brush, selected the various shades of green and blue and then sat to paint the landscape of Manipur in leisure. But Manipur is not about nature only. The heritage of this tiny state dates back to the ages of Mahabharata. As legend goes, Arjuna, one of the Pandavas, once came here and married Chitrangada, the beautiful princess of Manipur. The divine story of love is still alive in the gestures and postures of the Manipuri Dance, one of the famed classical dances of India.The state and central government has come up with a number of tour package tourism measures to improve the tourism in this virgin land of beauty.Manipur has a varied and proud history from the earliest times. It came under the British rule after the First Anglo Manipuri war of 1891. In this war, many great heroes of Manipur laid down their lives. Major General Paona Brajabashi died fighting the British Army in the battle of Khongjom. The British then captured Imphal and had General Thangal and Yuvraj(Prince) Tekendrajit hanged.
After India became independent on August 15, 1947; the Manipur Constitution Act, 1947 established a democratic form of Government with the Maharaja as the Executive Head and a legislature constituted by election on adult franchise. This legislative assembly functioned till it was dissolved on the integration of the state with the Dominion of India in October, 1949. Manipur achieved full statehood on January 21, 1972.
