Ludhiana: Overview
In terms of population, I lidhiana is now the biggest city of the 'unjab. It is located in the centre of the late, about 11 kms to the South of river ,utlej. The city was founded on a ridge of Isuclha Nala, which was once the bed of liver Sutlej. Ludhiana is a district head luarters and an important rail and road 'unction. Situated 310 kms from Delhi, 100 ions from Chandigarh and about 140 kms om Amritsar. Ludhiana or Lodiana is called liter the Lodhi dynasty which ruled Delhi uom 1451 to 1526 AD. The town was iounded by two Lodhi generals, Yusaf Khan and Nihang Khan, at a site of a vilLige called Mirhota in 1481 AD. The gen, •tals wer deputed by Sikandar Lodhi to rush the Khokhars who wre plundering (lie Jalandhar doab. Yusaf Khan crossed lhe river Sutlej and is believed to have • ,ettled at Sultanpur Lodhi. Therefore many historians consider Nihang Khan to )() the actual founder of this town. Lodhiana was the seat of the 10yernmetn for Northern India. A large hurt was built by Jalan Khan, grandson of Nihang Khan. During Mughal period, ;irhind was made the head quarters of 'he Province ( Suba ) and Ludhiana was oIlly a district ( Mahal).
