Nainital the famous hill re¬sort of India, has been the centre of attraction for thousand of devotye lovers of natue. Situated around a beautiful lake. an attitide of 1938 metres above sea level. The name "Naini" is derived from a temple to the goddess Naini Devi built on the upper adge of the lake and de¬stroyed ny the landslip in 1880 A.D. It was subsequently replaced by a modern structure. The word Naini, means Eyes, and Tal new lake.
The Naini Tal first discovery of this now popular hill station was in 18-11-1841 A.D. Mr. P.Barron a Europen merchant and an enthusi¬astic from Rosa near Shahja bhapur. According to Mr. Edwin T. Atkinson, Mr. P.Barron approached Naini Tal from Khairna side through the St. Loo George on Shaeka-Danda hill and returned by Ramghrh.
In 15-12-1842 A.D. Mr. P.Barron again visited Naini Tal and asked Md. J.H. Batten for a constractor to built twelve bungalors and the latter introduced him to Lala Moti Ram Gah of Almora who under took the work, Mr. Barron was the first man to built a house and named it. "PILGRIM COTTAGE" after his pen name "PILGRIM". This house is how owned by a prominent resident of Naini Tal . It is located just near the Naini Tal club .
The word "Naini" means "Eyes" and "Tal" means"Lake" . According to legend parwati the daughter of king daksha had married Lord Shiva against the wishes of her father. King Daksha held a great "yagna" but did not invite parvati and consort Shiva. parvati could not bear this direct in¬sult . In her great fury parvati gate erashed into the Yagna ground her life And later Lord Shiva retrived her half-charred eyes of sati dropped in the like while her body was the lake was given the name of "Naini Tal" or Naini lake the Lake of three Rishis-Atri pulastya and Pulaha.
