Leh, its capital the biggest Oasis of the mountain region and heart of Ladakh situated on the western end of the Himalayas, Ladakh has four major mountain ranges, the great Himalayan, Lankar. Ladakh and the kora koram, passing through it. Situated at 3,500 metres above sea level. Out of the total area of the state of 138, 9921 sq.kms, the district of Ladakh 97,782 sq.kms covers an area of 71 percent of the total area. Until some years ago, Ladakh used to be the gate way to tibet connecting India with Tibet and east Turkistan. As such, it was an im¬portant trade centre, paSham, salt, boxar, sulphur, spices, brocades, pearls, metals corpets besides being the meeting point of the Tibetan, Indian, Chinese, and Islamic cultures and traditions. Its valleys, about 500 sq.kms in area, lie along the heart waters of Indus, the sutlej and the chenab rivers. The great river Hindus, having originated hunders of km further east from near the kailash mountain and the Mansasarovar lake. in Tibet, flows in an almost stright line form the north-west to the south east of Ladakh.
Ladakh is also one of the largest and most beautiful natural lakes in the country. Pangona tro 150 kms. long and 4 km wide, is nearly an island sea at a height of 14000 feet, with intensely clear water of an incredible range of houses of blue.
The religious dimensions in Ladakh in Buddhism is the dominant from of the religion, with a mixture of the animistic practices. Both central and eastern Ladakh are predomi¬nantly Buddhist. While western ladakh is mainly shia Muslim. Ruling Muslim priests are known as Aghas who combine the secular and reli¬gious functions in the neviditary du¬ties The mosques and Imambars here are attractive examples of trani and saracenic architecture . There are some christain religion also.
The most attractive feature of the landscape of ladakh are the buddhist monsteries(Gompas). Situated on the highest point of the mountain spurs or majestically sprawling over cliff-sides, Architecturally interesting gompas provide the focus for the faith of the highly reli gious Buddhist people, the defiant beauty of its barren land scape, its unique flora and fauna.
