Kota: Overview

A historically important city of Kota is situated on the Eastern banks of river Chambal in the South-East or Rajasthan. A blend of the ancient and new Kota today is a modern town, A throbbing with the activity and progressive industrialisation. But the world charmlingers on and in the forts and places.

Rao Deva conquered territory in the 14th
century and founded Bundi and Hadoti.
This palace was built during the time when
the Hara Rajput Chieftain Rao Deva
ruled here in 1342 AD. When Jait Singh
of Bundi defeated the Bil Chieftain Koteya
in a battle, he raised the first battlement
of the Garh (fort) over his severed head.
Later during th reign of Mughal
Emperor, Shah Jahan at the beginning of
the 17th century, Rao Ratan Singh the
ruler of Bundi gave his second son Rao
Madhu Singh, the smaller principality of
Kota. The independent State of Kota be
came a reality in 1631 AD, when Rao
Madhu Singh. Soon Kota outgrew its par
ent state to become bigger in ae, richer in revenue and more poweful.
Maharao Bhim Singh played a pivotal role in Kota's history, having held a Mansab of five thousand and being the first in his dynasty to have the title of Maharao.
Kota came to be the hallmark of Rajput power and culture the elegantly carved architecture of ancient monuments and buildings is evidence of its blossom¬ing culture.
There is the Darbar hall with exquistic mirror work ebony and ivory island doors and treasures a wealth of Rajput miniatures of the Kota School. There are the Royal cenotaphs, a Haveli, the Brij Raj Bhavan Palace an island paace, the Jagmandir, all momentoes of history and time exuding a languid grace of the bygone era. It boaster of Asia's largest fertiliser plant, a precision instrument unit and an Atomic power station for Nuclear Research among other things.
Kota 35 kms from Bundi, 50 kms from Delhi, 981 kms from Bombay, 371 kms from Agra, 256 kms from Jaipur, 310 kms from Udaipur.
