Calcutta is the capital of the eastern state of west Bengal today. Calcutta a creation of British rule in India, is today a teeming crowded City combining the old and the new. Today it is still the most im-portant city in the east, The nerve centre of trade, a city dustling with a population of around 10 million.Calcutta would soon overtake Madras and Bombay to become the HO of British power in India.
