Kolhapur: Overview

Situated on the Banks of Panchaganga River, this town of great antiquity is known as Dakshina Kashi, It was the capital of the Kolhapur branch of Chhatrapatis. Its trade with ancient rome is proved by the discovery of coins and trading objects. The history of kolhapur is as old as this temple up to 1212 A.D the yadavas of Devgiri ruled over it after it was under Moghul Rule till 1675 when it was conquered by Chhatrapati Shivaji. In 1708 the capital of Marathas was shifted from Panhala to Kolhapur. It was a Prncety states under British rule till its merger after independence.
It is know for its cuisine, dress style, footwear, social customs sports, tradition of westing fondness for music Marathi film and stage, cooperative socities, engineering work shops and trade of agricultural and Industrial produce.

Kolhapur is a blend of ancient tradition and modern influences. The city is on the banks of River Panchganga and reflects a rich heritage along with a growing industrial sector. In 1945, excavations on the Brahmagiri hill in Kolhapur revealed the existence of an ancient town dating back to the Roman era. One of the most important cities of Maharashtra, Kolhapur had different dynasties ruling it in the past, but it was under the rule of the Marathas that it became a cultural hub with an active drama, music, painting and craft scene. The city is also dotted with temples built by the Satavahna kings. Of late, Kolhapur has become a prominent centre for the Marathi film industry. 

As of 2001 India census,[6] Kolhapur had a population of 485,183. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Kolhapur has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 75%. In Kolhapur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
