Jaunpur: Overview

Jaunpur was of great important Muslim settlements, when the city was founded by Feroz shah Tuglaq in 1369 A.D. to perpetuate the memory of his cousin sultan Mohammed whose real name was Jauna, Later around 1394 A.D. it became the centre of the independent sharquie kingdom of Jaungur founded by Malik sarvar. The Sharquie Rulers of Jaunpur were great patrons of art and Architecture and constucted many five tombs, mosque and other buildings in the Afghan style. Jaunpur was also an important centre of Islamic studies. Jaunpur had a munber of Hindu Buddhist and jain temples and monsteries before.
Jaunpur came to be know as the "Shiraz of India" Their kingdom from Aligarh in the west to tirhut and Bihar in the east almost the centire area of what is now uttar pradesh.
They display some features borrowed from the Tuglaq tradition
but still maintained a distinet style of their own, Characterised by two-sto¬reyed arcades, large gate ways and unusual-lookind minarets. Jaunpur is also know for its perfume and in¬cense industries.
