Jaipur: Overview

The Pink City, Jaipur the Capital of the Rajasthan, Jaipur is one of the most important, historical and ancient cities of India and among the most picturesque cities in the world and a favourite with tourists. This handsome city is the capital of Rajasthan the land of great Rajas. This is a fortified city and entered by seven gateways and several old and new wickets. It is surrounded by embattled by walls with rugged hills on three sides. The city derives its name from sawai jai Singh II, a prince, soldier and astronomer who built the capital in 1727 to replace his former capital "Annberwhich had become too cramped at its mountain site. So Jai Singh, a remarkable man of action, who reigned from 1699-1743 decided to built a completely new city in the plains.
The old name of the state was Dhundar " meaning a deserted tract. Its Rulers the kachhwahas are emigrants from Gwalior and Narwar. They last Gwalior in 966 AD but before the end of the eleventh century they were firmly established at Amber, the old capital of the State.

Prithviraj (1502-1524 AD) was the first of those rulers who were contemporaneous with six great Mughal emperiors. He reigned for three years after Babar had crossed the Indus. Prithviraj had nine wives and nineteen sons.
Raja Bahar Mal (1548-1574 AD) was the ruler of Jaipur, when Akbar ascended the throne of Delhi. His daughter Jodha Bai was married to Akbar and become the mother of prince Salim later known as Jahangir.
Raja Bhagwan Dass (1574-1590 AD) was the son of Raja Bahar Mal and made Rana of Indar agreed to submit to the emperor.
Maharaja Man singh (1590-1614 AD) become Akbar's trusted friend and gen¬eral and was entrusted with the more arduous duties.
Mirza Raja Jai Singh (1621-1667 AD) continued to help Mughal Empire with traditional chivalry and sincerity.
Maharaja Ram Singh (1667-1689 AD) received title of the Raja from Aurangazeb and was put in possession of his father's territory but reduced to a mansab of four thousand.
Bishen Singh (1689-1699 AD).
Maharaja Sawijai Singh 11 (1699-1743 AD) was a remarkable Ruler and Suc¬ceeded of the Gadi of Amber in the 44 years of Aurangazeeb's region and with six years of his death.
Ishwari Singh (1743-1750 AD) was the eldest son of Sawai Jai Singh II and succeeded his Gadi.
Madho Singh I (1750-1767 AD) became the Ruler of Jaipur.
Maharaja Sawai Prithevi Singh (1767-1778AD) was a minor and the eldest son of Maharaja Madho Singh. He succeeded him as a mere boy and died before coming to maturity.

Maharaja Sawai Jagat Singh (1803-1818 AD) succeeded the throne in 1803 and ruled for fifteen years. The British by this time had established firm Supremacy in
India.
Maharaja Sawai Jaisingh III (1818-1835) AD) was a minor when he became to rule over Jaipur.
Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh (1835-1888 AD) was only a minor when he came to the throne in 1835 but even at his tenderage he showed such remarkable signs of intelligence and ablility that he was invested with full powers before he could reach majority.
Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II (1888-1922) ascended the throne at the age of 19 Years. He was an orthodox Hindu Ruler. Having no son born to him, he adopted Kunwar mou Mukut Singh (later Man Singh II)
Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II (1922-1947AD) became the Ruler of Jaipur in 1922 but being a minor then a British Contorlled Minority Council supervised and Controlled his education.On the 17th March, 1931 AD he was invested with full powers.
Maharaja Sawai Jain Singh's various talents and interest are clearly exhibited in the city. The designing of the city was was entrusted to a young Bengali arcited. Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. who laid the plans according to the Hindu treatise, the Shilpa Sastra. Jaipur was built in the form of a Rectangle divided into blocks. with Roads and avenues running parallel to the sides.
In 1863 Jaipur dressed itself in pink to welcome Prince albert consort of queen Victoria. Since then the city had been known as the Pink City.
