Haridwar: Overview

Haridhar is situated on the right bank of the holy Ganga, and is the print where the river spreads over the northern plain. Associated with both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, Haridwar is among the seven sacred cities of India. Hari (God) and Dwar (door) the gate way to the gods. The town of Haridwar at the foot of theShivalik range mountains with run parallel to the great Himalayas.
It was known as Mayapuri in the ancient days and has been a sacred place of pilgrimage from time immemorial. It is also known as Gangadwar Tapovan, and Kapilstham. The plae has named Mayapuri owing to the sacrifice of sati. A paramount importance is being attached to Mayapuri because of the fact that the sacrificial role of Sati was played here. A large number of rishis and munis, saints, and sages were attracted to Mayapuri which was gained a paramount importance. Since the inception of Mayapuri it has been a homeof gods and goddesses rishis and Maharishis.
• Haridwar is one of the four pilgrim centres where Kumbh Mela is
held every twelve years and every 6 years there is the Ardhkumbh Mela. According to mythological belief millions of Hindus take holy dip in the sacred river ganges seeking emancipation from the wordly sins.
The astrological date of Kumbh as Haridwar falls when venues and Jupiter concide with aquarius and sun and moon are on the Aries and Sagit¬tarius respectively.
