Modern History
Delhi which since the year 1193 A.D. has been ruled by two Queens and some seventy Kings. The last Mughal King Bahadur Shah was defeated in 1857 by colonel william Burn.
Delhi was now a shadow of its former self. By the 18th Century British influence through the East India Company had increased until by the turn of the century the British were installed as protectors of the Mughal crown with a British Resident in Delhi. This continued until 1857 A.D. when the uprising against the British triggered the end of Mughal Rule of India. The last of the Mughals, the poet king, Bahadur Shah Zafar, surrendered to the British at Humayun's tomb. He was deported to Rangoon and his sons and grand sons were murdered. A new dynasty had come to rule in Delhi.
During almost 100 years of British rule, Delhi was of secondary importance as Calcutta was the capital of British India. in 1877, however Delhi was chosen as the site for a magnificent durbar at which Queen Victoria was proclaimed empress of India. In 1901 A.D. The accession of King Edward VII was celebrated in Delhi. Finally, at the last and most brilliant coronation durbar in 1911 A.D. King George V. the first English sovereign to visit India, announced the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to Delhi.
And so, once again a new capital was built on the hill of its Raisina, the imperial city of the British Raj which is the seat of the government of India to day. Now has first Republican Regine, thanks to that great leader and father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.
