Dalhousie: Overview

Dalhousie is one such hill station, nestle( on the spur at the Western end o Dauladhar Dalhousie in its present shap( was founded in 1850 when the British ac quired five hills (Kathalagh, Potreyn, Teral' ( Now called Mots Tibba by the locals,' Bakrota and Bhangora). Since the estate was founded in the time of Lord Dalhousie. The Sanitorium was recommended to be called Dalhousie by Sir Donald Mchoed. Dalhousie was made a part of Kangra Dis- trict of Punjab state. Later it was trans- ferred to the Guradaspur District in August 1861, only after reorganisation of the state, Dalhousie became a part of Chamba Dis- trict of Himachal Pradesh on 1st Novem- ber, 1966.
Dalhousie as its name indicates has been named after its founder the Vice- roy Lord Dalhousie. Situated 1525 mts. 2378 metres. This area was leased out by the Raja of Chamba high the British rulers. To begin with the settlers of Dalhousie where number of Lord Dalhousie's staff. But over a period of time it gained importance as a contonment with the influx of British army personnel escap- ing the scorching heat of the plains. On a clear day it is fascinating to see the rivers Chenab, Ravi and bear mendering down the Rolegrey vistas of the valley from the top of Dain-kund. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited Dalhousie in their formative period to immerse themselves in the leisurely quiet of this hill station. He said "One of the finest hill station is Dalhousie fro the beauty point of view, climate and agreable the surroundings. It is not a flashy hill sta- tion like some other and there are few amusements there for any part, I would rather go to Dalhousie that almost any hill station in India, Kashmir apart."
