Bijapur: Overview
Bijapur is a district headquarters of the Bijapur District in the state of Karnataka. Bijapur city is well known for the great architectures of histrorical importance built during the Adil Shahi dynasty. Bijapur City is the head quarters of the district and is located 530 km northwest of Bangalore. The city is about 550 km from Mumbai . Bijapur is an important historical town that is famous for its monumental heritage. Take tours of Bijapur to see the famous mosques and shrines made by king Adil Shah.
Gol Gumbaz is the most famous attraction in Bijapur. This is the second largest dome in the world and houses the tomb of king Adil Shah. Ibrahim Roza, which is beautiful tomb built by Adil Shah for his wife, is another important heritage monument.See the citadel in the main centre of the city. a small, fortified area with a moat. It has palaces, pleasure gardens and public halls belonging to the Adil Shahi rulers. Though it is in ruins but you must see the Gagan Mahal.
On the city walls, do not miss seeing the Malik-e-Maidan (monarch of the plains) cannon, which is one of the largest surviving bell-metal cannons in the world.
Take up excursions from Bijapur and go to the temple city of Alihole, 10 kms away. This temple town is famous for richly carved temples belonging to the Chalukya rulers (6th century).
