Wagah is 29 kms from Amritsar. Amritsar was founded in 1579 by Guru Ramdas, the fourth Guru of the Sikh faith. He constructed a pool on a land gifted by the Mughal Emperor Akbar and called it Amritsar, the pool of Nectar, giving the city its name. The Gugu's idea was to establish a rallying centre for his followers but he died two years later without giving shape to his plan. His son and successor, Guru Arjundev completed the project and built a temple in the midst of the pool and enshrined in it the holy book of the Sikhs, the Guru Grandh Sahib. Ever since, generations of devotees have been flocking to this temple making it the nucleus of Sikhism.
