Almora: Overview

The ancient hill station of Almora, situated at an elevation of 1646 metres above sea level. In the Kumaon Hills. Reputed for its health giving climate, is perched on a 5 kms long horse saddle shaped ridge. The town of Almora was founded about 1560 A.D. by Balo Kalyan Chand the Raja of Champavat, who later made if the capital of the Chand kingdom. It was ruled by the chand Rajas upto the 18th century. The Gorkhas ruled for about 25 years, after which Almora cave under British control till Independence.
The Almore natural beauty of delightful, is greatly enhaneed by the hills and the snow clad Hima¬layan peaks which surround it. The Sashaya hill on which the town is situated is described in the Manas Khand of the Skanda Puran as situ¬ated between Kaushiki (Koshi) and salmale (suyal) rivers. It is belived that on this grey sacred hill Lord Vishnu had his heavenly abode. While it is bordered by the gentle hills of Kumaon on three sides, its northern front affords a breath taking view of the Trishul peaks
