Almora: Overview
The ancient hill station of Almora, situated at an elevation of 1646 metres above sea level. In the Kumaon Hills. Reputed for its health giving climate, is perched on a 5 kms long horse saddle shaped ridge. The town of Almora was founded about 1560 A.D. by Balo Kalyan Chand the Raja of Champavat, who later made if the capital of the Chand kingdom. It was ruled by the chand Rajas upto the 18th century. The Gorkhas ruled for about 25 years, after which Almora cave under British control till Independence. Map
