Ajmer: Overview

Ajmer is situated in a picturesque valley. It is surrounded all around by the Ajay Meru ranges of Aravali Hills. The
Hindu means of "Ajay Meru" is that no one can win it. The City lies at the fort of the Taragarh hills from its base and is en¬circled by Taragarh fortress. This stronghold of the early Chauhans has witnessed many historic battles in the past. It was founded by Maharaja Ajaipal Chaunhan in the 7th Century A.D., The chauhans reigned here till 1193 AD. Prithiviraj chauhan was defeated by Sulthan Mohammed Ghori in 1193. Prithiviraj Chauhan the last Hindu ruler. Its peace was again disturbed during Timur's hurricane invasion of India. Subsequently it was seized by Rama Kumbha of Mewar and retained by him for a brief period from 1470 AD to 1531, it came under the domi¬nation of the Muslim Rulers. Later, Akbar the great annexed it to the Mughal Empire in 1556 AD and releasing its head quarters of his military operations for a time. Ajmer was a prize to all invaders, consequently in its chequered history. It was at Ajmer that the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1611 AD accepted the credenials of Sir Thomas Roc, Ambassador of king james of England. This was an event of symbolic significance for its foreshadowed the rise of the British in India.
Ajmeer has remained throughout a great Centre of piligrimage for both Hin¬dus and Muslims a feature that gives the city its Character and lends its importance.
